Ban Ki-Moon is the secretary General of the
United Nations. At present he has little authority to deal with Burma, unless a
UN Security Council resolution is passed to strengthen UN involvement in Burma.
You can write to Ban Ki-Moon to support his efforts to broker a security
council resolution on Burma.
Your letter should include:
A reference to the extreme brutality of the
regime, which routinely uses torture, forced labour and rape to oppress the
people and keep the junta in power.
A reference to the denied democratic
mandate of Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi.
An expression of your concern that the
junta might use force to suppress the current pro-democracy protests.
A clear statement that says you wish for
the UN security council to pass a strong resolution to support a peaceful
transition of power from the junta to the democratic leadership.
A caution that resolution must be reached
quickly as events in burma are happening quickly.
